all translate to Greek 2403 - practice idolatry.

what is it really?

In Revelation everywhere a derivative of the words ADULTERY, FORNICATION, and IDOLATRY are used, the meanings point back to Greek 1496 & 1497 (Strong's reference #) race; an IMAGE servant or worshiper.

An adulterer, fornicator, harlot, idolater is literally someone who follows after someone else's image or ideology! (doctrine, thinking, speculation, theory)

IDOL - Greek 1497 - eidolon {i'-do-lon} - from 1491; an image (i.e. for worship) 1) an image, likeness, a) i.e. whatever represents the form of an object, either real or imaginary. Greek 1491 - eidos {i'-dos} from 1492 1) the external or outward appearance, form figure, shape, 2) form, kind. Greek 1492 - eido {i'-do} or oida {oy'-da} a root word - to see, i.e. to turn the eyes, the mind, the attention to anything. Greek 1496 - eidololatres {i-do-lol-at'-race} from 1497 and the base of 3000 1) a worshipper of false gods, an idolater. Greek 3000 - latreuo {lat-ryoo'-o} from latris (a hired menial) 1) to serve for hire, 2) to serve, minister to, either to the gods or men and used alike of slaves and freemen.

Greek eidos means 'form, shape' (it came from the same root IDEA). From it was derived eidolon, which originally meant 'appearance.' It developed from there to 'image' either a 'mental image' or a 'physical image'. Also from Greek eidos came idyll 'picture,' Idea & Ideal - archetypal form of something - etymologically it is the 'look' of something - it comes ultimately from the same source that produced Greek verb Ídein 'see.' Modern English noun - 'notion, mental conception' developed in Greek via 'look, appearance,' 'image,' and 'mental image.' Ideology is a derivative.

I.D. - Identity - identical - 'the same,' a pronoun formed from ID 'it, that one' - used in English since the 17th century for referring to a previously cited author or text. This formed the basis of late Latin identitās, which meant literally 'sameness.' 'Individuality.' We are taught from the time we are born to pursue (follow after), worship our I.D., our individuality in this world.
